Black Queer Owned Businesses for Pride Gear This Month:
Movies to Watch For a Pride Month in Quarantine:
Moonlight (2016)
A great movie if you’re ready to shed some tears. The story of a young black man navigating his sexuality and his relationships to his mother and father figure who is a drug dealer in Miami. (Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube)
Call Me By Your Name (2017)
Another sad one! This movie explores a young adult’s internal relationship with his sexuality through his relationship with his tutor. Also Timothee Chalemet is in it. (Amazon Prime, YouTube)
Boy Erased (2018)
A traumatic film that will certainly crush you. This is the story of a young man sent to conversion therapy by his ultra conservative southern parents. It is a really sad movie, but worth the watch if you feel it is something that won't be too difficult for you to witness. (Hulu, HBO, Amazon Prime, YouTube)
The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018)
A bit of a lighter take on the experience of conversion camp (if that’s even possible). That’s not to say the experiences portrayed aren’t equally as traumatic as those shown in Boy Erased, but the general tone of this film is a lot lighter. Ladies if you’re looking for some LGBTQ representation for yourself look no further! (Hulu, Amazon Prime, YouTube)
Battle of the Sexes (2017)
A comedy with Steve Carrel and Emma Stone - so for starters an all start cast - that covers all kinds of issues in regards to sex and sexuality. (Amazon Prime, YouTube)
Love, Simon (2018)
If you’re looking for an LGBTQ movie with a cute plot and a lighter tone this is the one for you. (Amazon Prime, YouTube)
Booksmart (2019)
This movie is not largely about the LGBTQ experience, but its a great movie and it has a very realistic portrayal of the lesbian experience. Very funny, worth the watch! (Hulu, Amazon Prime)
Literature to Read for a Pride Month in Quarantine:
The Color Purple - by Alice Walker
An incredible telling of a romance between two black women set in the South in the 1930’s. I love love love this book.
Rubyfruit Jungle - by Rita Mae Brown
This book is one of the most in depth tellings of the lesbian experience that I’ve read. I loved it so much I wrote my senior thesis in college about it. A coming of age story that leaves no stone unturned in its exploration of the lesbian experience.
Sister Outsider - by Audre Lorde
A series of essays by Audre Lorde who was self described as “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet.” Her work is as relevant today as when she wrote it.
We are Everywhere - by Matthew Riemer and Leighton Brown
A history of the LGBTQ community and the Stonewall movement.
Sissy: A Coming of Gender Story - by Jacob Tobia
I have not read this yet, but I’ve always heard great things. A great exploration of the transgender experience.
Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag - by Rob Sanders
A picture book telling the story of Harvey Milk and the origin of the Rainbow Flag. If you have any children in your life that you want to educate on the history of the LGBTQ community this is a great place to start!
I hope everyone finds something on this list that speaks to them. Happy Pride Month!
